Reading the Rulebook
Your first step into the world of Aisorath is the rulebook. You don’t need to memorize all of it, don’t worry. You can always ask for clarification on mechanics during events.
First, read pages 6-10 and get a sense for the world.
Then, pick a culture your character will be from (pages 14-21) and a creature type you’d like to play as (pages 11-13).
After that, follow the steps on page 23 and start building your character’s skill set.
Submitting a Character
Once you have a rough idea of what character you’d like to play, you can start the character submission process! This is done by clicking the appropriate button in the #character-submission channel in our Discord:
Step 1: Get a player number
Step 2: Submit character skills
Step 3: Submit a backstory
You may not play a character unless their character submission process has been completed and their backstory has been approved. If at any point you have questions during this process, reach out to our New Player Team via the #message-staff channel in our Discord.
We highly recommend being in our community Discord, as we post events and updates there. However, if you would like to submit a character without being in the Discord server, you may start that process by emailing DialOfRuin@gmail.com.
What to Bring
When at a Dial of Ruin LARP event, you’ll be responsible for your own shelter, food, and water for the weekend. You’ll need to bring a tent if you decide to camp. Bring containers for your food as well, so that ants and raccoons don’t get into it.
It can get fairly cold in the winter evenings, as well as quite hot during the summer days. Prepare accordingly with thermals and layers, and bring mosquito repellent and sunblock.
The Dial of Ruin requires every player to be at least 18 years old and to be vaccinated against COVID-19 with 1 booster. Bring proof of vaccination and your ID to show at check-in.
For your character’s costuming (also referred to as garb), look at the pinterest board for your chosen culture for inspiration. Each creature type also has certain costuming requirements that should be fulfilled. Apart from that, your character’s garb should fit in the genre of medieval fantasy with no immediately recognizable pop-culture iconography.
We recommend doing a “kit test” before the event to make sure you’re able to move freely in whatever your character will be wearing. We recommend wearing comfortable, close-toed shoes, as you likely will be on your feet and possibly running a lot during the event.
Lastly, you’ll need neutral clothing (blacks, browns, off-whites) with no visible logos to wear during your NPC shift. You’ll be wearing your NPC costuming over this clothing.
Registering for the Event
You’re able to purchase a ticket for a Dial of Ruin event online in the “Events” page. When doing so, you will be asked to pick an NPC shift. Each player will be required to help out behind the scenes as an NPC during the event.
On Site
When arriving on site, set up your camp in the appropriate out-of-character camping area. After you’ve gotten settled, you’ll need to check in with the staff team. Once check-in opens, you’ll be able to get your character sheet and show your vaccination and ID. There may be extra time during this process, which is a perfect time to get into your character’s costume or your NPC garb, depending on what you’ll be doing once the event begins!
The event begins with a series of announcements called “Listen-Up.” This is required for every player, as there may be crucial information communicated during this time. After listen-up ends, “game on” will be called. At this point, everyone should begin role-playing as their character.
Throughout the course of the event, an effort to stay “in-character” should generally be maintained. Things like obvious cell phone use, chatting about modern current events, etc., should be kept to a minimum and only done discreetly, if at all. Exceptions include being in any out-of-character spaces like the bathrooms, your tent, and NPC Camp. Always prioritize taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally, over staying in-character.
At the end of the event, an announcement of “game off” will be called, and the event will formally end. At this time, please check in with staff to see if they need help cleaning up after the event. After that, turn in your character sheet, and that’s it!
We’re excited to see you soon!
